These past saturdays I've been dedicating my time to some community service hours. I am taking a sociology class and for our final, we need to complete 30 hours of community service. It took me a while to decide where i wanted to do my hours at. A friend and I decided that we wanted to do our hours together and we called a nursing home. They called back a week later in the school hours so we weren't able to answer, we called them back, and never heard from them again. Time was really starting to run out and neither of us cared what we were going to do and we were taking any suggestions. We asked our teacher and he suggested Jewish nursing home. Neither of us are Jewish so we wanted to wait a bit to see if anything else came along. After about two weeks of nothing else, we called the nursing home. With in half an hour of leaving a message, a lady called back. This already was a good thing. She told us she wanted to meet with us and we scheduled a day. Since then, I've had many new experiences and learned a bunch of new things. It's a great experience and your doing something good. I suggest that anyone who can, should help out anywhere possible. It makes you feel great and helping the need is always a good thing.

Sleep
These past few weeks, I've been in my bed at around 9 pm. When I wake up the next morning at about 6:30, I feel very refreshed and ready to start the day on a good foot. Studies have shown that teens haven't been getting enough sleep in recent years. Teenagers have the stereotype that they all go to bed late, wake up late, and always sleep in class. Some studies that were done show that it is like this in teens because of the "biological clock" that they have in them. This "clock" is known as the circadian rhythm. It changes in teens because of a horomone that is released in the brain called melatonin. This horomone is produced later at night, so that is why most teens do not fall asleep early, or earlier than kids and adults.
Teenagers should get a total of 8 and a half hours of sleep, at minimum, each night. Sleep helps our moods, our performance, and it is very important. How many hours of sleep did you get last night?

Music!
Have you ever wondered what a world without music would be like? Music is everywhere in life, whether it be an actual song, or a beat. When i walk down the street, i find myself either humming a song i heard earlier, or walking to a beat of a song. In the car i always sing songs to the radio, and when you watch movies, you might not always notice, but during a good half of the movie, music is more than likely playing. There are all different kinds of music. Rock, pop, rap, country, classical, punk, hiphop, alternative. What is your favotire?
Music is a big part of my life. It can alter my mood, depending upon the lyrics or the melody and depending upon the mood I'm in, it can determine what type i listen to. Music can also sometimes tell a lot about a person's personality. Next time you meet someone, ask them what kinds of music they like. Its a great discussion topic!

Did you eat breakfast this morning?
Have you ever thought about all the different types of cereals out there? Trix, Lucky Charms, Honey Bunches of Oats, Fruity Pebbles. What is your favorite? If i had to chose, i would say that my top three are Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Captain Crunch, and lastly Cheerios. Not only are there cereals out there, but pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, and all that good stuff. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gets you going in the morning and it gives your body the nutrition that it needs. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast are more healthy and fit, and also get better grades because they are able to be more focused. Next time you think you don't need to eat breakfast, or you say you dont have time, grab something like a piece of fruit. Its always good to start your day with something in your stomach.

How cola effects girls who play sports
Girls, have you ever broken any bones? Do you play a lot of sports? Well, a study done by Grace Wyshak, a Harvard biostatician, shows that girls who drink a lot of soda and play a lot of sports are more likely to fracture bones. The study done with 9th and 10th grade girls showed that girls who drank cola had bones that fractured 5 times as often as girls who didn't drink cola. For some reason, other drinks that are carbonated had less of an impact than the cola did. The results of this also share that the girls will probably have bone problems when they are older because if the bones are being effected at such a young age, then it will hurt them later on in life. A study has not yet been done with boys, but they say that they need to watch them closely too. http://discovermagazine.com/2000/nov/breakpop
