These past saturdays I've been dedicating my time to some community service hours. I am taking a sociology class and for our final, we need to complete 30 hours of community service. It took me a while to decide where i wanted to do my hours at. A friend and I decided that we wanted to do our hours together and we called a nursing home. They called back a week later in the school hours so we weren't able to answer, we called them back, and never heard from them again. Time was really starting to run out and neither of us cared what we were going to do and we were taking any suggestions. We asked our teacher and he suggested Jewish nursing home. Neither of us are Jewish so we wanted to wait a bit to see if anything else came along. After about two weeks of nothing else, we called the nursing home. With in half an hour of leaving a message, a lady called back. This already was a good thing. She told us she wanted to meet with us and we scheduled a day. Since then, I've had many new experiences and learned a bunch of new things. It's a great experience and your doing something good. I suggest that anyone who can, should help out anywhere possible. It makes you feel great and helping the need is always a good thing.

I think those restrictions are pretty ridiculous. 30 hours in a semester is very hard to do, given students' schedules and the way the places don't cooperate. If a nursing home doesn't respond, the student shouldnt be held accountable. The community service may be a good aspect of the class, but the teachers probably dont understand the difficulty
It's almost ironic how hard it is to find a place to volunteer nowadays. I volunteer every Sunday afternoon at a hospital, but I went through much delay and time consuming processing details in order to get the position. I'm glad, however, that you were able to find a place to volunteer.
